Roads

The road between Sao Paulo and Campo Grande via Castello Branco and Marechal Rondon (crossing rio Parana at Tres Lagoas) is very good. The first 100 km after Tres Lagoas the road is pretty bad, but it improves after that. Just before Campo Grande there is an automatic radar speed detector - and there are a couple more on the road to Cuiaba. From Campo Grande to Cuiaba the road is bad in Mato Grosso do Sul and much better in Mato Grosso. Between Rondonopolis and Cuiaba inside 'urban zones' there are bumps, potholes and tracks which can easily wreck a car. From Cuiaba to Pocone the asphalt is excellent. The Transpantaneira is no problem except for the bridges in the last 40km. Near Campo Grande on the road to Aquidauana there are multiple deep potholes in the otherwise smooth pavement. From Aquidauana to Bonito the dirt road initially is good, but closer to Bonito it becomes very uneven because of the rocky terrain. The other road between Campo Grande and Bonito (thorugh , Buraco dos Araras and fazenda Jatoba are on it) is better, although near Bonito there are 40km of dirt road. Don't even think of going from Campo Grande to Sao Paulo via Presidente Prudente.

Pousada Toca de Onca. 10 km north of Aqidauana on the road to Barra Mansa, (20 23.59'S, 55 51.06'W), phone (67) 9986-0538. This is not a fazenda but a pousada. OK but nothing spectacular, ~R25. On the Aqidauana river.

Pousada Calliandra. In Bonito, rUA 29 DE mAIO, 799 - Centro (one block from the intersection with Coronel Pilad Rebua). Phone (67) 255-2013, (67) 255-1139. Nice and clean.
